Worst experience EVER

Good Morning Barbara, Hope this email finds you well. I am writing to you regarding our recent trip to Sunscape, Dominican Beach; we returned yesterday. Regrettably, our experience at Sunscape was HORRIFIC. This came as a tremendous disappointment to us as we trusted your advice when booking the "deal of fortune." You claimed, as did cheap Caribbean, that this resort was a four star, it was a two star at absolute best. Upon arrival, we were convinced to upgrade to the "Sun Club" which cost us an additional $350. We wouldn't have minded spending the money, if it was well spent, but after a few hours of being at the "VIP" Sun Club, we saw that it was just another ploy to make money off of unassuming tourists who put faith into their booking agent. The dining options were limited. There were two restaurants that were open for breakfast, two for lunch, and three for dinner. None of these establishments accepted reservations so the wait to dine was absurd. Furthermore, there was ONE beer option (Presidente), ONE white wine option and ONE red wine option. We opted to purchase a $40 bottle of white wine off of their wine list, and we were told that they "ran out." The "beach" was atrocious. It had giant sea walls in the ocean. It was under construction, practically non existent, dirty, full of seaweed and had a bulldozer on it, DIRECTLY outside our balcony. We "upgraded" to an ocean front view to celebrate our anniversary in peace and tranquility and got anything but that. We should have been advised of the conditions of this beach. The grounds were filthy as were the rooms. There was a septic tank that backed up with RAW SEWAGE causing such an offensive odor and completely unsanitary conditions. Just as a side note, in meeting other couples at this resort, who also booked the deal of fortune through cheap Caribbean, all received sunscape as their hotel destination Coincidence? I think not. I have included pictures for your review so that you may see for yourself exactly what I am speaking about. I trust that you will do the right thing to compensate for this absolutely despicable experience. We are extremely unhappy and dissatisfied. Sent from my iPhone

Not sure what else you need...

By no means a perfect resort, but as far as Dominican Resorts go it suited us perfectly. The value was incredible, booked the Deal of Fortune, was placed here and was happy as it looked like a newer resort. By the comments of the other resorts we were more willing to deal with issues a new resort would have (i.e. hot tubs not being hot) rather than the types of issues an old resort would have (i.e. musty moldy rooms). Service was great, staff went out of their way to make sure we had everything we needed the entire trip. Beach and Pools were Average as compared to other Dominican beaches and pools. With that said, it's still an AWESOME place to spend a couple days. The beach is eroding severely and they have placed man made sandbars (made of plastic) in the ocean to calm the waves... made a calmer ocean behind them for us to lounge in. Dining was meh. As all DR resorts are. Chopsticks was great, I could eat a stir fry every night and almost did while I was there. Best part of this resort is no weekly limit on restaurants, if we went to one that wasn't great or quantity wasn't enough, we went back to buffet or the pizza bar. There was certainly enough to fill up on. Room was standard. Thought the AC could have been stronger, but I like sleeping in a freezer, my gf was happy it was in fact not a freezer in the room (though setting was set as low as possible). Could have also just been our room. All in all - if you can't enjoy it here, you're a miserable person who was going to have issues anywhere you went. I will say, the resort/these vacation companies were RELENTLESS with excursion type sales pitches. Just be polite, that if you are interested, you'll find them. Other than that, when you check in, just say no to the "VIP breakfast" - ask to go to your room immediately.

Can't please everyone!

Just returned from sunscapes after our 1 week stay. We were a party of ten; ages ranging from 9 to 75. We did the wheel of fortune and were admittedly nervous about being put in this resort based on the negative reviews. Some people do nothing but complain! Was it the best place I have ever been, no, but I've been to plenty worse. Yes, the beach is a little disappointing with the man made buffers to control the beach erosion and the surplus of sea weed some days, but its Mother Nature and the resort did its best to remove the sea weed. The 4 pools at the resort more than made up for the beach issues as they were always warm and inviting. The main buffet was excellent for breakfast as we all had made to order omelettes daily. We went to all 6 restaurants for dinner and never had a bad meal. Again, it's not the meats you get in the u.s., because it's a third world country. The chop sticks restaurant was our favorite as we went there twice. Must do the hibachi. The Mediterranean olive branch was also very good. Italian and French were good as well. There is a pizza station making pizza to order daily from noon until late at night along with a burger station and a buffet all located next to the beach and two pools. The two swim up bars were also good, not the most premium liquors although the swim up at the sun club did have premium liquors; abosolut, etc. The grounds are kept in perfect condition and well maintained. The room cleaning service was a little hit and miss. Rooms were adequate, we stayed in building 25, first floor. My only complaint in the room was the bed was very hard. We were able to walk out of our room and be in one of two pools within 50 feet. Night life is very energetic with a nightly show and lots of dancing and drinking in the Bavaro lobby. I would go back and can't see why so many people gave this resort such negative reviews. The service was very good in all restaurants and check in and out was a breeze. We did one excursion, which I would highly recommend, dolphin explorer. For $550, my family of 5 was able to swim with the dolphins for almost an hour. We all enjoyed it including my 75 year old mother. Don't listen to the complainers...go! Where else can you go to an all-inclusive resort for a week for under $1,000 per person including direct flights??

Overall a nice resort

We stayed for 7 nights starting on Feb 11 , resort is now 99% completed with the recent renovations. We have stayed at worse resorts but also stayed at much better , think the price we paid , $2000 total for both including air from Michigan , made this week at Sunscape easy to make this a 4 out of 5 rating. We were in the Sun Club portion of this resort which does help a lot , some nice perks come with the Sun Club .

Very low quality resort

Our trip started off by getting into our private transportation to find the guy does not have air conditioning in his van, he left the fan blowing hot air so my entire family was drenched in sweat when we arrived to Sunscape Dominican Beach. There is the little guy that introduces himself as your concierge but his only objective is to trick you into going to a special breakfast where they have sales people that try to convince you to buy a timeshare type package through them which is a complete rip off by the way we learned the last time we went there to tell them we will not attend their breakfast period. There are no choices for breakfast as they promote to you on their website and cheap Caribbean uses that as selling points as well, there is a single buffet breakfast that you share with the flies. Most of the lids to things that are supposed to be hot or warm are left open so they get cold and the flies get on that food too. For lunch you have a few choices to choose from, the same fly buffet or pizza then there is a burger & hot dog grill. The burger was gross it was extremely low quality beef or it was from some other animal, I could only eat one bite. I eat everything in the states and I was in the army and lived off of MRE's while I was in so I am not picky I just want it to be safe to eat in most cases. The second morning I ordered room service for breakfast expecting it to come directly from a kitchen but it was the same fly feast from the buffet. I got sick from ingesting some parasite. I was in bed the next 3 days and didn't eat anything at all. When I was able to get out of bed I looked closely at the foods in the buffets and that is when I noticed they have flies everywhere. I took a picture to post on FB and several people around me looked to see what I was taking a picture of and they saw, on one basket of bread there were 5 flies, not moving just eating and laying eggs. The people around me put their bread back. For dinner there are several choices to eat, I only had the Chinese place. The food there was good and they cook the hibachi stuff in front of you if you go to the Japanese side. My family didn't get sick from that place. But we went out of the resort to eat most days after I got sick. The website shows a water park with big bouncy house water slides I was so happy for that because my kids would love it so much but that does not exist, as there were several restaurants that were there but they never opened. So be careful if booking based on what it advertised because a lot of it is false advertising but since it's outside the US they get away with it and face no consequences for that. The room was nice but the bed was literally the worst thing to sleep on in my life, including military time spent sleeping in the woods, jungle, or even mountain terrain in ranger school. I am sure a homeless person would refuse it after he/she tried it out. But all in all after the low quality food, false advertising, uncomfortable beds and food poisoning, we had a good time. But this is no where near a 4 star or 4 diamond resort as they bragged about it, its about a 1.5 to 2 star joint. Unless in DR they go on a scale of 1-20 then I would agree with a 4 star rating. Sunscape

THE STAFF THAT SELLS SOUVENIRS WERE VERY VERY PUSHY, INCLUDING THE STAFF THAT PRESSURE YOU INTO SIGNING UP TO STAY THERE AGAIN. THEY WERE HOUNDING US AT DAY ONE. OBVIOUSLY BECAUSE THEY NEW WE WOULDNT RETURN IF THEY ASKED US TO SIGN UP AT THE END OF OUR STAY. THE CASINO WAS A JOKE AND HAVING ALOT OF EXPERIENCE GAMBLING IN VEGAS I KNEW IMMEDIATELY THEY WERE TRYING TO SCAM US AND THERE WAS NO WAY THEY WOULD LET US WIN. WE ENDED UP TAKING TAXIS EVERYWHERE BECAUSE THE TESORT WOUPD ONLY SHUTTLE YOU TO THERE PLACES TO SHOP. OVERALL NOT A GOOD EXPERIENCE. BELIZE AND COST RICA ARE FAR FAR BETTER ON EVERY LEVEL. ON THAT NOTE CHEAP CARIBBEAN WAS PLEASANT AND EASY TO WORK WITH. WE WOULD USE THEM AGAIN

Amazing resort

We decided to do the deal of fortune this time, which means you have no idea where you will be going until a week before you leave, a little scary but the deal stated the resorts are all 4 Palm trees or more. They do tell you the 4 different choices you may be staying at and we had already stayed at 1 of them and it was great so thought what the heck, made it kinda fun and you get a good deal. I'll start with the FREE Wifi through out the resort! Although being on vacation is about staying off the technology and spending time together there is some downtime in the evenings and if you're like me, you like to post a few pics on social media for all your friends back home. The staff was amazing, the place was recently remodeled and had only been open 3/4 weeks when we got there so everyone is pretty new and really excited about their new jobs, so friendly and helpful with all you need. A little language barrier with some staff but with the main Amigos you need to talk with (bar backs, check in, entertainment, servers) They speak fluent English. The grounds are still growing and being worked on but I know in a few months it'll look like the place has been open for years. The pools were very nice, lots of activities throughout the day. They have 3 different pools, one sport activity busy pool, one more laid back and one thats away from all the action thats really laid back. The ocean is beautiful, only complaint here is that its on the Atlantic side of the Island, therefore not as clear and a little more rough. They do have wave breakers so you and your children can get in with no problems. Food and rooms were good, no reservations to eat so that made us really happy that we could eat at any restaurant whenever we wanted or twice if we wanted to (which we did, Japanese Hibachi) So all in all a great trip, too short of course when you come home to snow. I would recommend!

If you love food and a comfy bed this is not for u

I do not normally do reviews, if great food is important to you and you do not like buffets this would not be the place for you. Food was bland and the raw veggies made us sick.....we heard they were grown in manure and not washed properly- this is word of mouth only! BUT we did have some digestive issues after eating them. things to note- The resort is clean outside of the resort the city itself is very dirty - garbage bags and litter everywhere, lots of poverty and people trying to get you into stores or sell you things, beware of scams! The employees are insistent on tips you will not get service without giving them......A dollar or two, plan on bringing at least a 100-150 in $1 and $5 with you for tips. If you don't say you want alcohol in your drinks they will give you virgins and all the liquor is watered down. Spend a little more for the Sun Club it will be worth it. You will not get seafood on the resort there are restaurants nearby - if you like great food try them! The beds are super hard.,.if you have a comfy bed you will be disappointed! Also- they will try to sell you a trip package right off the back as soon as you get there they will set an appointment- you don't have to go! We would not return..... but there were a few good points! Jose and Michelle at the pool bar in the Sun Club were great - and we met some great people! We also had great messages from Margarita! And it was warm and the beach was beautiful!

Good , not excellent

The deal of fortune that I bought includes 5 NICE hotels and I felt that the hotel you guys assigned me and my family, comparing to the other ones on that list, is the most ugliest..... People very friendly, but the beach its very ugly and disappointing... Not too many options of restaurants and all them outdoor ..... mosquitoes everywhere including on the food. Sales people inside the hotel very annoying trying to sale a "time share" thing to you and took our whole first morning to get out of them.... very sad.

Unequal treatment

We were highly disappointed by the lack of professionalism displayed by some staff members during our stay at Sunscape. At times we were completely ignored and made to feel like "second class citizens" while watching employees cater to and provide service to Europeans and other white guests. Also, after waiting for our room to be "ready" at 3:24pm we got the key to a room with a terrible smell, dirty drinking glasses, and missing towels and amenities. During the time we waited for our room to be ready we were also informed that we had a "presentation" scheduled for the following morning. We didn't know about the presentation prior to our arrival at the resort but decided to attend in order to get a tour of the place and a gift. We were told the presentation would take 90 minutes (including breakfast) but instead it took over 3 hours. Our recommendation would be to improve the condition of the rooms, provide advance information about sales presentations, and to provide better/equal treatment to non-whites and minority guests. Thank you.
