"The only complaint that I have is, I think the buffet needs a better selection compared to other resorts we've been to. And a better way to keep the food warm!" – Mammarod

If you love food and a comfy bed this is not for u

I do not normally do reviews, if great food is important to you and you do not like buffets this would not be the place for you. Food was bland and the raw veggies made us sick.....we heard they were grown in manure and not washed properly- this is word of mouth only! BUT we did have some digestive issues after eating them. things to note- The resort is clean outside of the resort the city itself is very dirty - garbage bags and litter everywhere, lots of poverty and people trying to get you into stores or sell you things, beware of scams! The employees are insistent on tips you will not get service without giving them......A dollar or two, plan on bringing at least a 100-150 in $1 and $5 with you for tips. If you don't say you want alcohol in your drinks they will give you virgins and all the liquor is watered down. Spend a little more for the Sun Club it will be worth it. You will not get seafood on the resort there are restaurants nearby - if you like great food try them! The beds are super hard.,.if you have a comfy bed you will be disappointed! Also- they will try to sell you a trip package right off the back as soon as you get there they will set an appointment- you don't have to go! We would not return..... but there were a few good points! Jose and Michelle at the pool bar in the Sun Club were great - and we met some great people! We also had great messages from Margarita! And it was warm and the beach was beautiful!

Good value, great staff, lots of fun for the kids

Food options could be better, night show could be much better, everything else is great. Totally renovated hotel, everything brand new. Wonderful service, great pool, wonderful staff. A few tips will go a long way to get better drinks and even better service at the food stations. Highly recommended

Amazing resort

We decided to do the deal of fortune this time, which means you have no idea where you will be going until a week before you leave, a little scary but the deal stated the resorts are all 4 Palm trees or more. They do tell you the 4 different choices you may be staying at and we had already stayed at 1 of them and it was great so thought what the heck, made it kinda fun and you get a good deal. I'll start with the FREE Wifi through out the resort! Although being on vacation is about staying off the technology and spending time together there is some downtime in the evenings and if you're like me, you like to post a few pics on social media for all your friends back home. The staff was amazing, the place was recently remodeled and had only been open 3/4 weeks when we got there so everyone is pretty new and really excited about their new jobs, so friendly and helpful with all you need. A little language barrier with some staff but with the main Amigos you need to talk with (bar backs, check in, entertainment, servers) They speak fluent English. The grounds are still growing and being worked on but I know in a few months it'll look like the place has been open for years. The pools were very nice, lots of activities throughout the day. They have 3 different pools, one sport activity busy pool, one more laid back and one thats away from all the action thats really laid back. The ocean is beautiful, only complaint here is that its on the Atlantic side of the Island, therefore not as clear and a little more rough. They do have wave breakers so you and your children can get in with no problems. Food and rooms were good, no reservations to eat so that made us really happy that we could eat at any restaurant whenever we wanted or twice if we wanted to (which we did, Japanese Hibachi) So all in all a great trip, too short of course when you come home to snow. I would recommend!

Sunscape

THE STAFF THAT SELLS SOUVENIRS WERE VERY VERY PUSHY, INCLUDING THE STAFF THAT PRESSURE YOU INTO SIGNING UP TO STAY THERE AGAIN. THEY WERE HOUNDING US AT DAY ONE. OBVIOUSLY BECAUSE THEY NEW WE WOULDNT RETURN IF THEY ASKED US TO SIGN UP AT THE END OF OUR STAY. THE CASINO WAS A JOKE AND HAVING ALOT OF EXPERIENCE GAMBLING IN VEGAS I KNEW IMMEDIATELY THEY WERE TRYING TO SCAM US AND THERE WAS NO WAY THEY WOULD LET US WIN. WE ENDED UP TAKING TAXIS EVERYWHERE BECAUSE THE TESORT WOUPD ONLY SHUTTLE YOU TO THERE PLACES TO SHOP. OVERALL NOT A GOOD EXPERIENCE. BELIZE AND COST RICA ARE FAR FAR BETTER ON EVERY LEVEL. ON THAT NOTE CHEAP CARIBBEAN WAS PLEASANT AND EASY TO WORK WITH. WE WOULD USE THEM AGAIN

Overall a nice resort

We stayed for 7 nights starting on Feb 11 , resort is now 99% completed with the recent renovations. We have stayed at worse resorts but also stayed at much better , think the price we paid , $2000 total for both including air from Michigan , made this week at Sunscape easy to make this a 4 out of 5 rating. We were in the Sun Club portion of this resort which does help a lot , some nice perks come with the Sun Club .

Best Vacay ever, money well spent

Truly one of the most memorable moments of my life. I dont travel often, so this was a big deal and Sunscape most definitely delivered. The staff was the best part, I cannot say anything negative about any one of them. Everyone that walks past you says Hola or Buen dia. Check in literally took less than 5 minutes and I was served a drink on the spot while I waited. The grounds and beach are super clean, plenty of spots to sit or lay to chill. Good entertainment. I cannot say enough good things about this place. The food, omg. The hibachi spot was the best spot. Drinks were always flowing. I would absolutely come back, next time I am getting the sun pass for an even better experience. If I had to say anything negative, it would be that my fridge wasnt restocked daily (first world problems). Everything else got a 5 star rating.

Great bang for your buck

We booked Deal of fortune which guaranteed we would be in 1 of 4 resorts.after finding out we were going to the Sunscape and looking at trip adviser we became a little worried. They just reopened and looked as if they were having lots of issues. Check in people were saying it was so slow but we were in our room in 15 minutes and they were actually telling people to move faster that were checking in.The beach is not the best storms have caused a lot of erosion as far as being clean people had said there was sea weed and it wasn't clean but every morning there were 12 - 15 workers raking the beach. Pools are very clean. Rooms were very nice and updated Food was good in Buffet ,Steak at the grill Chopsticks.Pizzeria excelente. As for the French and Italian they need help . Drinks were average once in awhile you get a bad one but its AI dump it and go to someone different. Overall I was very impressed with just about everyone that worked there they work there but off to try and make your vacation as good as possible. i also feel they were working hard at correcting all the complaints on trip adviser.

good resort for the money

resort was nice and large because you get to use both sunscape dominican and bavaro properties. Beach had erosion issues which kinda sucked and in certain spots of the property theres was a foul odor of a sewage problem the resort had. Lots of meal choices to choose from but the drinks at the beach were low budget, cheap brands which you could really taste. Room was excellent with hot tub! Very good waitresses at the pool that serve you in a timely manner.

Great Potential But Needs Work

Overall we had a good experience but there are several things that need to be worked on throughout the resort. I believe that once they work the kinks out Sunscape Dominican Beach will be a great economical resort option. There were 6 adults total in my group. We stayed at Sunscape 1/3/17- 1/7/17 in 3 different rooms. Rooms: We arrived at about 4pm and had to wait about an hour for our rooms. Not a big deal to us at all. We enjoyed some drinks at the lobby bar. The wait staff & bartenders were very friendly and attentive. Plus the bar was stocked with top shelf liquor. We also could have gone to one of the restaurants, walked around the resort , etc. Unfortunately we had issues in all 3 rooms. In one the air conditioning wasn’t working. It took a couple of hours but the room was upgraded to an ocean view deluxe room. In another room the toilet never flushed correctly. In the last room the water in the toilet keep running and there was no shower curtain or door. The issue with the toilet was fixed immediately but there was no solve for the shower. Other than these issues the rooms were comfortable and clean. The TV & safe worked just fine but I heard that was not the case in all rooms. It was a bit bothersome that maid service was so sporadic. As other reviewers have mentioned, one day they would clean in the early morning and others not until after 4pm. Restaurants: Our first night we opted to try the Italian restaurant……TOTAL DISASTER. Although the restaurant was barely half full the staff could not handle the orders. It seemed to us that the kitchen was trying to service not only the Italian restaurant but the French place next door as well. There was no organization with the wait staff on the floor. We couldn’t figure out who our server was and it took forever to get water & have our orders taken. Someone brought around bread but then they didn’t have butter. We were told it would be available later. It took at least 45 minutes for the appetizers to arrive. Once they did they were a joke. The fried calamari was an order of 4 tiny rings. Entrees arrived 30 min after the appetizers. Food was just so so…while the chicken was decent the lasagna had absolutely no flavor. All portions were very small. The other restaurants we tried throughout our stay were Windows, Chopsticks and The Grill. These were all good options & much more pleasant experiences than the Italian place. They provided plenty of food options. The seafood, fruit and veggies always tasted fresh. Staff: All the staff we encountered (besides the at the Italian place) were fantastic. So friendly and attentive! You are in a Spanish speaking country. Don’t expect everyone to speak your language perfectly. You as the visitor should also make an effort! Entertainment: They always had plenty of activities planned throughout the day…zumba class, games on the beach, fire show at night. Most were good, some were a bit cheesy for my personal taste. Did I mention the lobby bar has top shelf liquor?? That was all we needed. We hung out there a lot and played cards, dice, etc. Pools & Beach: So many great pool options. You could see staff cleaning the pools daily. They provided plenty of chairs, floating mats, inner tubes, etc. They get 5 stars in the pool category. The beach was a bit hilly but overall fine. They do have blockers in the ocean to control the waves. This didn’t bother us at all. Flat beach with no blockers is only a short walk away. Drink service was great and there were plenty of chairs available as long as you arrived early.

Our 1st trip to Punta Cana. Had Amstar transfers - went very smoothly and we got to the resort quickly. It was opening day and we were the only ones checking in at that time so check in went smoothly. We had requested connecting rooms as we had our 2 teens with us and they honored that request. One room had a king bed, the other had 2 full size beds. Rooms were large, clean and between drawers and shelving had the most storage space I've had in a hotel room for a long time. The veranda was nice with a table and 2 chairs and also a built in drying rack for swimsuits. Each room had extra blankets and pillows, there is an ironing board and iron, and a coffee maker with coffee and sugar. The mini-fridge was stocked with 2 bottles of water, sprite, orange soda, coke, diet coke, and 2 bottles of Presidente beer. No hard liquor in the rooms. Also have a little table, chair and lamp in room. No writing paper or pen in room so bring that with you. The bathroom was beautiful with a hairdryer, zoom makeup mirror, hand shower head and rain shower head. Ample towels and washcloths. Each bathroom had conditioning shampoo, shower gel, soap and body lotion. The grounds are very pretty - the pools lovely and they have a ton of inflatable for kids to play in the pool. There is both a regular trampoline as well as a water trampoline for kids and a "Rock Climbing" inflatable in the ocean. Ping pong table poolside, but its so windy I don't think you can play!!!! Volleyball court amongst chairs on beach. We were very pleased with all the food in the restaurants. Its an AI , so you can't expect gourmet food. But there was plenty variety at each meal in the buffets. We had great dinners at the Sunny Side Grill,French restaurant and Italian Restaurants.Pizza was good as was the beach grill. Of note: they did not have styrofoam cups for hot beverages, so if you like to take your coffee and sit outside- bring a cup because they will put it into a small plastic cold beverage cup. The employees at the hotel were the nicest, most friendly folks I've ever been around. There was not a single employee- be it managers, housekeepers, security or construction workers that did not smile and say Hola when they saw us.Many did not speak English so it's helpful if you download an app that translates Spanish. After all - it is a Spanish speaking country! Shout outs to the Concierge and Amstar staff who tried their best to rectify the problems we had! Cons: Since we arrived on opening day, a very large portion of the resort was not yet functional .So the "pay for one and play at 2 resorts" didn't work out for us. The gym was closed, then opened, then closed. No hot water in the shower at first.Phone and electric outlet by phone didn't work. Kids room for ages 3-12 had 2 pool tables, 2 ping pong tables and 2 air hockey tables. But since it was ages 3-12 my teens weren't allowed to play there. I mean really - what 3 year old plays billiards??? The drawers in the dressers are not properly secured and if you're not careful when you open the drawer it will fall out onto your feet. Had some ants and mosquitos in our room, but I did see them spraying probably every other day for mosquitos. The bean bag chairs in the lobby are probably the most uncomfortable chairs ever - if you are older you'll have a hard time getting out of them!!! The alcohol - ok- the only thing we got a buzz off of was the bottles of Presidente beer in our room.Drank mixed drinks all day and nothing. Wine was awful -but you can buy a bottle of better wine at dinner.( 60$ for a bottle of Kendall Jackson Merlot) We all got sick with colds, fevers and travelers diarrhea and had to go see the hotel doctor in order to be able to get our money back for the excursions we signed up for and were too sick to go on.The doctors visits cost twice the amount that our excursions did, and they would not take our Travellers Insurance - Allianz as they did not have a contract with them. But they did give us a lot of paperwork to submit to the insurance company and said they thought we would get reimbursed.Keeping my fingers crossed. Thanks to the doctor and the concierges we were able to get more than 2 bottles of water a day in our room. Would have gladly purchased some, but the gift shop in the hotel only had a few items and didn't sell water. They also didn't have adult tylenol, but we were able to get what we needed in a timely fashion from a nearby pharmacy which apparently is open 24hours and delivers to the resort. As you walked the grounds there was a sewer smell and we unfortunately ended up having sewer back up into our bathroom making one of our 2 bathrooms non functional for days. They had a lot of men working around the clock to rectify the sewage problem, and it looked like things were improving by leaps and bounds. Lastly -the main reason we came to Punta Cana was because we have always seen the most incredibly gorgeous beaches advertised. Unfortunately the beach here looked nothing like the beach advertised on the website. We were told the beach had severe damage from the hurricane and there are now around 10 geo tubes in the water to try to prevent further erosion. A lot of seaweed in the water. I think this place will be nice eventually and thats why I gave it a 3 star. We were very disappointed to have paid a lot of money for a resort that had so many amenities, and yet when we got there much of them were not yet functional.
