Would have looked around more

We had a long bus ride to the resort. After we arrived we were greeted and before we could go to our room we had to set up a meeting to go listen about other resorts. After that was set up we went to our room. The room was very beautiful. We had an anniversary sign with balloons hanging up when it wasn't our anniversary. Our phone didn't work. We contacted staff every day sometimes up to 6 times a day about fixing our phone. Well it's he last day of our vacation and our phone doesn't work still. We spent more time at our neighbor resort breathless. If we come back we will book there or go to the other side where the beaches are white sand and blue water. Staff was great on the beach

Good, but will not go back

Overall we had a nice vacation. For the price we paid, it seemed worth it. I think American's expect way more, but the realty is, this is an underdeveloped country. Service here was great; however, the resort was dead so I don't know if the service would be the same if the resort was at capacity. We did not take kids, and this resort is kid-friendly. We just didn't see very many options for kids and we paid attention as we take are kids on vacations often. Room: Floors are slippery. Be careful! After speaking to many guests, it doesn't appear the Jacuzzi tubs work at all. Like others, ours leaked and would not fill up. Room temperature was very hard to get right, Either it was extremely cold or very humid and hot. Grounds: Absolutely beautiful! Resort is only a couple months old so many plants need to grow. Pools/beach: Very clean As many other reviews state, the staff has limited English. SO! English is not their language?? Food: this is solely the reason we wont go back. We are open to different choices, but the food overall was not good. Very different. We ate at the steakhouse when we ate. Many meals we didn't eat. All other options were just ok. Breakfast was just horrible. I don't think the food is exclusive to our hotel, we had friends staying at other resorts and they said the same thing. I think its a Dominican thing. Preferred club: I wouldn't waste the money. Nobody used the private pools and the adult pool is dead.

BEYOND DISAPPOINTING

I will start with what was good about our stay: The weather was great, the beach and ocean were excellent, and the food at the French restaurant was decent. Unfortunately, the rest was very disappointing and shame on CheapCaribbean for touting this resort as 4.5 stars. The only thing about it that resembled 4.5 stars was the "Preferred Member" pool/bar which you only have access to if you pay a good deal extra. Here is only a partial list of issues we had: - It took 2 hours to get a room ready for us at check-in time. We were told to come back in 20 minutes, again & again & again. - Our shower overflowed for EVERY shower, flooding the bathroom, room, and even the hall outside the room. We had 4 rooms and 3 of the 4 had this problem. I complained several times and was promised a fix – but that never happened. They do not even leave extra towels to help. Once it overflowed into the hall so a worker came in and took all the soaked towels on the floor, leaving us with no extra towels and water still on the floor. We expected he was sending someone else to help but he didn't. - No attention to detail - our toilet paper was not replenished so I had to wake my son in another room in the middle of the night to get some, it took 3 days and multiple requests to get washcloths in our room. At 8am, there were no towels at the gym & 40 minutes later, still no towels. There was some very nice cold lemon water but no cups to put it in. -The rooms smell horrible. They leave incense in the rooms which you have to burn to disguise the smell. - The halls have a VERY loud echo and we were often awakened early by the maids conversing loudly in a group outside our room. - The food is inconsistent and fair at best. My husband got food poisoning and lost 2 precious days of the vacation recovering. Expect to wait about an hour to get a table at the restaurants. - The only bar where you can get a decent drink is the bar for Preferred members. The liquor elsewhere tastes as if it has been watered down or swapped for lower quality alcohol. - Some of the staff at the restaurants are downright rude. One hostess scowled at me several times because we had 8 people and at Hibachi, we were just finishing our dessert when we were asked to LEAVE because another group was waiting. (I get that people were waiting but their slow service had been the reason we were still there and they could have routed us to another table or handled it in some other way than booting us out) - This resort is suppose to be new and looks good in pictures but on deeper inspection it is clear that corners were cut. For example, the pool tables in the sports bar are second hand (coin slots have been removed) so the only way to get balls out is to tip the machine on its side - this presents a problem if someone scratches the queue ball in mid game! The fridge in 1 room, the TV in another, and the phone in a third didn't work. None of the automatic hand dryers in the common bathrooms worked. No toilet paper holders in common bathrooms so lots of hands have been on those rolls! - The keys to several of our rooms stopped working mid week so we had to get new ones. -Many workers don't understand enough English even for simple requests and either walk away or just nod or simply bring you the wrong thing when they don't understand. We can't expect people to know all languages but in this digital age, translation issues could be easily resolved with a little portable technology. - This resort has sea sport people that solicit guests to book excursions. My husband booked a fishing trip for 4 people. It was a DISASTER, a complete waste of a money, and waste of a precious vacation day. The boat was horrible, the crew drunk, and no one even touched a fishing pole. And life vests in 4 foot waves? They were told they didn’t need them! They were promised 4 hours of fishing time and got 1 ½. - There are people that walk the beach and harass guests or try to sell them things- like the guy that puts a parrot on your shoulder and demands a good deal of money after you take a picture. He threatened my son and said "He would find him" because he refused to give money. At the end of one day, we witnessed some workers of the resort being given money by some of these people. Overall, even if the service and other things had been decent, this resort is NOT a 4.5 star resort and I believe the current rating is insulting to people who trust in this rating system. We look forward to our vacation all year long and our trust in ChearpCaribbean has been seriously compromised.

Underwhelming at best!

We booked this resort because it was touted as being new. Upon arrival, it is astheticaly pleasing, but upon closer inspection, you can see this is NOT a new construction. It was evidently a resort previously that has been renovated. Upon entering our room, it smelled musty, but it was roomy enough and appeared clean. We arrived around 4pm and were STARVING so we immediately set out to find something to eat. NONE of the restaurants were open and the only thing available at that time was the Beach Grill, where the food looked like it had been cooked 2 days prior. So, unfortunately We had to wait until 6:30 for the buffet to open to eat. The buffet was pretty good, with a lot of choices, even for my daughter who is a vegetarian. I especially enjoyed the selection of sushi, sashimi and the cevice was amazing! Our first drinks were OK., a little watered down at some of the bars, but we found the lobby bar and the swim up bar to have good strength. This resort advertises Top Shelf Liquor, but there was VERY little top shelf anything, and the staff did not recognize the most common liquor names (LIKe Crown Royal, Patrone, etc etc) They served only domestic liquors in all the bars besides the lobby bar, and even that selection was VERY limited. Most of The staff there does not speak fluent English, so it made it difficult at times to communicate exactly what you wanted. The pools and beach were pretty and well kept. Unfortunately, the weather was windy and the water was rough, so no water sports were operating during our entire 6 day stay, which was VERY disappointing to our girls. The other restaurants in this resport were mediocre at best and the whole experience for us was underwhelming. It was difficult to find something besides the buffet to eat for breakfast or lunch unless you wanted dried out food from the beach grill. We had trouble the first night with the lights in our room not being able to be turned off, so maintenance had to come at 2 in the morning to unscrew light bulbs and then fix it the next day. It took us 30 minutes to communicate to someone what the problem was because of the language barrier. There were several other problems with our room at different times that maintenance had to correct which was frustrating, including the shower overflowing because the drain was backed up with hair. For a resort that had supposedly only been open for 30 days, we expected a whole lot more! We would not come back to this resort, and possibly never back to Punta Cana at all. There are much better places to spend your money, and better values to be found that NOW Onyx Punta Cana.

BEYOND DISAPPOINTING

I will start with what was good about our stay at NOW ONYX: The weather was great, the beach and ocean were excellent, and the food at the french restaurant was decent (except that it is the ONLY place you can't wear shorts). Unfortunately, the rest was very disappointing and shame on CheapCaribbean for touting this resort as 4.5 stars. The only thing about it that resembled 4.5 stars was the "Preferred Member" pool/bar which you only have access to if you pay a good deal extra. He threatened my son and said "He would find him" because he refused to give money. We witnessed some workers of the resort getting "paid off" at the end of a day - guess this is why they are allowed to wander around threatening people. Overall, even if the service and other things had been decent, this resort is NOT a 4.5 star resort and I believe the current rating is insulting to people who trust in this rating system. Recommend but do you're research

We had an amazing time at this resort. We had a bit more rain than I would have liked, but it apparently this is there rainy season so we should have done more research on that. But as for the over all it was beautiful resort. We did have a few hiccups though. Our biggest problem was trying to figure out the benefit to purchasing the additional VIP, Aka the Preferred Club Membership. It seemed as though they talked it up and almost pushed it on us so much that we didn't have a choice but to get it, then we got it none of the things we were promised were being delivered. Also the pools and bars only "preferred members" had access too were crawling with people who didn't even know what the Preferred Club was. The only way to tell anyone apart was by their room key, which was never asked to be looked at by any of the staff the entire time we were there. So once we realized we had maybe been taken for a ride we requested a new butler (a butler is someone they appoint to VIP customers to help with anything you might need). We met ours when we signed up and never saw her again. So once we got our new one he was amazing. Very helpful in trying to make our stay more enjoyable! We loved him very much by the end of the trip. Some people even offered him a place to stay if he ever decided to visit the U.S. But we still felt there needed to be a better system put into place for VIP, maybe a scanning tool of some type. Another thing I had complaints about was the Booz selection. With the VIP we were told we would have better alchol choices, even though upon booking we were told "TOP SHELF" was provided for all customers. Now I've been burned on this before in Mexico, I was hoping it would be different. But to Americans Skyy and Absolt are not considered "Top Shelf". I really didn't drink much the entire trip due to lack of options. Our Butler did bring us a bottle of Crown, which most of our group did enjoy, however I'm a vodka person and Titos or Ciroc would have been a better option for me. But even with the VIP our liquor options really didn't change. I think bottom line if you want something you have to ask for it (or complain) or else they'll never know. Also the smelly rooms... I read prior to the trip the rooms may smell. They do have a moisture problem that they're aware of and claim are trying to resolve . But our room did have a dingy smell to them. In preparation I brought a bottle of air freshener (I used the whole thing in 1 week) and they provide insense. But I highly recommend bringing something to help with that odor, you're clothes will also start to smell too. And lastly we had some amazing food, but everything we ordered from room service was terrible. First it took anywhere from 35-60 minutes to get something, and nothing we got was good. Some of it was even inedible. So I highly recommend filling up as much as you can during breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The buffets and restaurants were all very good. So all n all it was still a great vacation, we saw some cool things and enjoyed the beautiful pools and beaches. We had full access to Breathless next door which was great for the "Party life" and had our resort for relaxation... It was the perfect combination. I would highly recommend staying there, just keep in mind they are brand new and are still working out some kinks.

teething problems

This resort is suffering through teething problems. It just opened a month ago and it is not running as a well-oiled machine. Pros: 1. Great lobby. Looks grand. Smells nice. Good design. 2. Courteous service. Everyone was very friendly. 3. Excellent food options. The Mercure french cuisine was excellent, but you need pants and closed-toe shoes. The burger place at the front of the resort makes a delicious burger. They open at 3. 4. Many pool options. We got "upgraded" to a walk-out room with a "semi-private" pool. Cons: 1. Teething problem - they checked us in, but didn't put key cards in our folder. So when we got to our room, we couldn't get in. 2. They do not stock the room bar often enough and with enough drinks. They come by once a day and put in 2 cans of beer. c'mon! 3. Some stuff is not functioning yet. TV menus still have default templates. The LED strip over the headboard in our room was falling off. The supposed grand water fountain in the central lawn wasn't operational. You can tell a lot of things were rushed during construction. The ground crew was still planting flowers when we got there. 4. I know it's a necessary evil, but we were constantly pushed to listen to their "not a timeshare" sales presentations. Honestly, this is the worst part of going to the Caribbeans. It starts at the airport and does not end. 5. Finally, this was the absolute worst. If you book the hibachi dinner at Spice. Do NOT go with this "chef" named Roger. We were thoroughly disappointed. He did a quick routine with "blindfold" in the beginning and that was it. He just proceeded to cook our meal in front of us. No talking, no entertainment. NOTHING. I felt bad for this one family whose daughter was celebrating her 21st birthday. She was a good sport about it, but the look on her face said it all. To add insult to injury, the group next to us got what sounded like an awesome chef. Lots of conversation, talk, showmanship, and overall fun. Our table... crickets. Again, if you get Roger, I'd advise you to walk out and try some of the other dining options.

Overall Nice

Nice resort. I’m glad we had full access to both NOW Onyx and Breathless. Now was more quiet and relaxed and Breathless had more of a party atmosphere. Lots of food options including free room service, lots of pool and beach options. Good service everywhere we went. the only thing that wasn’t great was the room was very moist and smelled a bit like mildew. Its so humid outside so it felt a bit damp inside with the AC. I heard from another tourist that every hotel is like this and they brought some type of portable dehumidifying device. That’s a good idea, not sure what that is though. I wish the hotels would provide. Other than that, we had a really great vacation.
