This resort seems to be under the radar - even the taxi driver had to ask directions from several in Juan Dolio. It is a hidden gem - modern, mid sized, a busy bee hive of staff constantly working on maintaining and improving the facility and attending to guests. The beach is beautiful, with palm and other trees right in the sand for shade if you like, lots of chaise lounges and drink service on the beach. We never saw more than a hundred people anywhere at once. Three buffet meals daily with wine poured at lunch and dinner. Two bars - beach bar open all night, and pool bar til 11. All drinks are included except imported beers and wine by the bottle at the wine and cheese bar. Even a fridge in our room with a couple of beers and soft drinks replenished daily - included. A coffee shop with indoor and outdoor poolside seating offers all made to order barrista drinks - hot or cold, even correto with whiskey, Sambuca or Irish cream - with a case ful of pastries and cookies - all included! We ate at both the Dominican and Italian restaurants by reservation, reminiscent of a cruise dining experience with options to order for each course - included. There is a daily program of activities starting with a bike tour at 9 am, sports and games - archery, tennis, batting cages, etc. til evening kiddie dance along, Michael Jackson Show (surprisingly impressive!) and disco. We enjoyed morning Spanish lessons on the beach and aqua gym. No lazy river for the children, but a small playground. Great for people who just want to eat, drink, and relax as well as those into active sports and games.
FIRST OBSERVATIONS: Caribbean resorts that we have stayed at (many) have big beautiful resorts all lined up one after the other. Juan Dolio is an older Our first impression of Juan Doilo and Emotions was negative. Most unimpressive area and somewhat desolate. When we checked in the resort seemed pretty small and meh. That impression was soon to change! STAYING AT EMOTIONS: Once we settled in and got adjusted to the resort we fell in love with it! WHY? - the workers are great, they want to please you and they're not looking for tips like most places (we did tip). - the food and drinks are very good and the specialty restaurants are fantastic! (especially Italian) - the resort grounds are beautiful and well maintained. - We got an upgrade to Building #4 (Adult Only). It was great! Updated rooms, comfortable beds, huge 2 person shower (note: the shower floor is fine, the issue is there is only 1 small drain for 2 shower heads. So the drain may at times have trouble draining quickly). Also, building #4 is close to all the action but is still quiet to sleep in. - the beach is great and safe to walk in both directions. BIGGEST PLUS: The resort has an awesome "common area" at the main pools where there are a bunch of cafe table and chairs in front of shops(coffee shop, wine and cheese shop, brewery/sports bar, gift shop). This is where everyone comes together and hangs out and the ambiance is excellent.
From the moment we arrived we were disappointed. We checked in at the 3 pm check in time and were told that it would be about a 30 minute wait for our room key, when we finally received our room key the wait for someone to help with our luggage was so lengthy my boyfriend decided to carry it on his own. After lugging our bags all the way to the back of the resort, my boyfriend then had to pick up our bags and carry them up 3 flights of stairs as there are no elevators. Upon entering our room, which was mediocre at best, we found that it was not the king size bed we reserved but 2 queens. We contacted the front desk, waited about 20 minutes, and someone came and moved our bags down one floor to a king size bed. We then decided to go explore the grounds and attempt to get something to eat. We inquired about reservations for one of the 3 restaurants and were told that we could not make any for that night due to the fact that you must make them the day before and before 3 pm. This was very frustrating being that check in time is 3 pm and we were not made aware of this before checking in, or during check in. After going back and forth with the management, we were finally able to reserve something for our first night. As far as the food goes, the 2 buffets are like cafeteria food from a school, and if you don't catch it in the first hour the food gets cold and has flies all around it. The 3 restaurants are mediocre, but a good save from the buffets. But if you're hungry after 10 pm please make sure that you have brought some snacks, because the resort offers no food after 10 pm, and the gift shop that only sells some chips, closes at 11. The alcohol situation is not any better! There is no premium liquor available, not even if you're willing to pay extra. It is all cheap liquor we'd never heard of, and super sweet half frozen drinks. You can purchase like 2 different kinds of premium liquor in the gift shop for some astronomical price. The beach is across the street from the resort, and the street is a busy street utilized for other businesses, hotels and residences with lots of cars and motorcycles passing by. There is no waitstaff at the beach so if you want drinks or food you have to walk up to the bar to get it yourself. If you're a pool goer, good luck. There is one main pool and one adult pool which is not accessible unless you paid the extra money to access it. The main pool is nothing special, and is dirty after everyone being in it for a couple of hours, and it is not cleaned during the hours it is open. If you happen to be staying there on a Sunday, be ready to share the pool with anyone who pays for the day pass they offer, that allows anyone not staying at the resort to utilize the pool and free drinks from 10 am - 4 pm. The pool was so crowded at 10 am that we had to go to the beach across the street. These patrons were allowed to bring pool floats as well as speakers which were blaring music. Along with all of this you will be sharing your time with cats who roam the entire property, beg for food when you're eating, and we had the privilege of listening to cat fights and never ending meowing at night while we were trying to sleep. I would not recommend any one I know to stay here. This is a motel with cheap liquor and mediocre food. It is definitely not worth the money we paid, we were very disappointed.
This was our first trip away with our three toddlers and Emotions was a perfect option for our family. Beach front, relaxing, easy access to everything and very secure with 24 hour security. It was not overwhelming in size like some other all inclusives but was still large enough to not feel crowded even on busy weekend days. The service was top notch, everyone went out of their way to help us with the kids and lend an extra hand when needed. The staff was always smiling and friendly and really made everyone feel welcome and special. The beach is lovely, we've stayed in the area many times and it doesn't disappoint. There was also an all adult section of the resort which allowed us not to feel like we were bothering those not traveling with children. Decent food options. The Domincan restaurant was our favorite. Little boutique restaurants and shopping options and a nice new spa which offered great services. We left feeling like we had the break we needed and would love to go back soon!!
Everyone was amazing. However, we were there as the Hurricane was approaching. Don't go during October when there are hurricanes forming. It made the beach water not so pretty nor clear blue. This is not the hotels fault though. The staff was amazing! Food buffet was pretty decent. The outdoor bar only offered pizza and burgers though. There are dogs roaming the private beach and they are very friendly and I felt bad for them. If dogs bother you, just be aware they are there. Additionally, there are some people selling massages, jewelry, etc. on the beach, but they are very nice and trusting! I did not mind them...others may. We purchased items without having cash on us and they all told us it was okay, we could pay them later. That was nice of them to trust so much. The pools are beautiful and the rooms are beautiful and spacious as well! They did have a disco club and entertainment on the outdoor stage every night also! I would def love to go back during another season!
i was looking for a more intimate resort for some much needed R&R and Emotions fit the bill. I didn't want a mega resort with tons of people waiting to make reservations, lines at Buffet or having to take a tram to the beach. If you're looking for 5 star resort with people tripping over themselves to serve you, this isn't the place but neither are you paying the premium bucks. The resort is recently remodeled and new. The rooms were large and bright. We were in building 5 at the back which was great in that it was nice and quite. I don't think i would have liked to be in the adult (building 4) or other buildings near the pool and stage since it would have been much louder. Our room was on the 3rd floor which meant we had very high cathedral ceilings which was nice. There was a remote controlled air conditioning unit that worked well. They could use more storage (3 small drawers and missing hangers). The shower door did leak (floor is not graded correctly) but the door swings both ways so rolling up a towel and then placing the bath mat on the other side of it worked well. The maids must know this and this is how they set it up after the first day and they left plenty of towels. There is a good size fridge with 3 bottles of water, and a can of regular and light coke and sprite. We left a tip with a request for cerveza and two cans were left for us. The food was good and variable. They need more servers and better training of the servers at the buffet. We eat mostly at the buffet at the beach. The other buffet may have had more choices (they looked like they had sushi one night and a made to order caesar salad the one night we eat there.) but we just liked being able to eat outside and watch the surf. We didn't make breakfast but 1-2 times since we liked to sleep in (They should consider possibly staggering the hours of the two buffets so if one closes the other is still open) but the coffee shop was great. We would get our double espresso or cappuccino on our way to the beach and a bloody mary once we got there. They also have pastries, cookies and bottled water at the coffee shop all included and the frozen mochas were great in the afternoon. We eat at all three specialty restaurants. The service was the best at the Dominican but we enjoyed them all. The worse service was at the Italian but we had the late seating and there was a large rowdy group that might have stayed from the first sitting. They were also short staffed with only 1 regular server and they had pulled people in from elsewhere to help who were obviously trying. you need to make the reservations the day before and can only make 1 night at a time. The first two times I arrived around 9 and 9:30 and there was minimal wait. The last time i think there was a large air transit group that arrived the day before and there was a long line at 9 but i was still able to get a reservation. We did go to Oaks one night before dinner. We love wine (and the house wine is rough) They have a nice wine list that was reasonably priced (good spanish and south american reds) when you purchase a bottle they make up a platter of cheese and freshly sliced smoked ham carved right there off the bone. They charge $15 if you don't buy wine but it's complimentary if you do. (Makes that $29 Rioja that much more affordable) We really enjoyed it. You can also buy wine and they will deliver it to the restaurants for you. We felt the bartenders were good and they never failed to make whatever we asked for. I do wish they had a menu to know some of the options. There is no waiter service on the beach but that might be a good thing. The road is a nonissue. It's more like a lane with very few cars passing by. The beach was great and we could always find lounges by the water where there was always a nice breeze. There are vendors but they only allow 4 on the beach for a 20 min period. They have to have a licence/pass that security checks. They were all nice and would leave you alone once you politely shack your head or say your not interested. A couple of dogs and cats but they're all rather shy and wont come to you unless you call them. They're actually trained to do there buisness outside of the resort property. We did walk into Juan Dolio a few times. There's a market that has anything you might have forgotten from sunscreen, cigars, souvenirs, liquor and wine, munchies.... There's a bank and an ATM that will let you take out 5000 pesos (the ATM at the hotel only lets you take out 2000 pesos -about $40) (If you need to get money off a visa, remember to bring your passport) several bars and some pretty highly rated restaurants. We also took the local bus into Santo Domingo and to Three Eyes National Park which was fun (catch it across the street at the back of the resort. cost 200 pesos each way) All in all we really enjoyed Emotions. Cant beat it for the $.
Emotions was a lovely little resort that was a great getaway for a couple on a budget. When we arrived at the airport in the Dominican we got right on the shuttle and it took us to the resort about a 25 min trip. The resort was very nice and well maintained. We stayed in the adults on section. On the weekdays we the place was not crowded, the two weekend days it seemed to fill up a lot. The pools and resort were very well maintained. The staff was very friendly. The coffee shop was great. The food at the restaurants was very good. The buffet was better than a typical college cafeteria but not out of this world. Again the price was right. The only real negative of the whole trip was you felt like you were constantly be sold something. Both on the resort from people selling other vacations and on the beach from people selling souvenirs, You were always on the defensive. Not adding to the relaxation. Again we were on a budget and for a young couple it was a great vacation!
Lets start with when you get there. When you arrive at the resort you receive a drink that is called Emotions which was a refresher from the hot weather. If you end up liking the drink you can order it at the bar located at both the beach and pool area. The people at the front desk gave excellent customer service. I especially enjoyed talking to JOSE who gave me and my boyfriend a free room upgrade since there were rooms available to give out. All of the workers I talked to know English but I know the Spanish language and didn't have any inconveniences. If you like to drink refer to the bartender called PABLO he is usually situated by the bar near the beach. He knows MANY drinks and makes them very well. He left me very impressed. I noticed that the reviews say that the food is repetitive and I will let you know that it is not. There are a variety of food for the three courses of the day. I was surprised everyday that I was there which was SIX days. I ate something different everyday. What I will say that is true about the reviews are the dogs BUT see just like there are cats every where in NY there will be animals in DR too just that there are dogs instead. The dogs are by the beach and there are usually one or two but you don't have to worry about them the waiters shoo them away. To let you know in advance there are people who will try to sell you their items by the beach and all you have to do is give them a firm no if you don't want anything and they will go away although some of them are pushy. Also, there is a travel company in the resort who will push their services on you. While I was there someone had complained and they stopped being very insistent. They rooms are kept incredibly clean. The room I was in had a good A/C and a flat screen TV. There is housekeeping every single morning. The resort has everyday activities that is provided to you as a schedule in paper when you arrive. They also have games such as billiard, ping pong, hockey table, archery, rock climbing, and more. They also have a night club in the resort that is open till early morning. I will definitely be coming back to this place.
The resort was very clean and well equipped. Rooms were remodeled and very comfortable. This resort is very well staffed and the staff were awesome and made sure everyone was having a great time! Food was great. Beach and pools were beautiful. Very relaxing vacation from start to finish.
First off, if you dont like people bothering you this isnt the place for you. The beach is filled with people trying to sell you things to the point you stay at the pool. And they constantly come back to hound you, ive had the same guy come to me everyday and tells me to make sure i dont forget its to make hom money. This beach was very much polluted and there are rocks every where. There are stray animals every where poor things. Ive never wanted to book an early flight back home until this trip. The room is ok im still here so its not the greatest a.c is broken and fuses have blown. Food, not that bad but still cant wait to get home and eat. I will not return to this hotel.
