The Chenay Bay resort was a wonderful escape from the hustle and bustle of our large westcoast hometown. The grounds were clean and inviting. The front desk staff was friendly and helpful. The individual cabana rooms were very comfortable and cozy (plenty of room). Having the kitchenette and studio-sized room and ammeneties was great. We never felt like we were in a large crowded resort. The on site restaurant was unfortunately closed for the majority of our stay, but we were able to find a wide variety of delicious fare in town.
The staff were great and friendly. Dining on site could be a little more varied, but there are other good nearby dining options. Complementary kayak and snorkels were amazing - we kayaked out to the island (behind it) in the bay and snorkeled by ourselves - lots of beautiful coral, clear water and explored the island a little. The pool and hot tub were great too - clean and modern. The scent of jasmine was intoxicating. The cabins are spacious and all you'd need - the fridge and kitchenette were a nice bonus. The mattresses could have been more comfortable and the linens a bit more upscale, but all in all, a great spot. The only downside was swimming at the beach. It's so shallow and in September, when we went, the water was choked with seaweed/algae. But all the beaches on St. Croix are publically accessible, so a short trip to another beach is recommended.
Our escapade to this oasis of bungaloes was a sweet respite from the ordinary everyday chain resort/hotel. Friendly people, relaxed atmosphere, and a very comfortable little beach were just what we needed.
It looks like St Croix used to be a nice place. Now the coral reefs are almost all dead, erosion from uncontrolled construction has made the water milky and cloudy, so even if the reefs had not died you would not see much anyway. The streets are dirty with garbage strewn about. Don't bother with the attractions like the Christopher Columbus' Landing spot - there is just a pile of garbage dumped on the beach and no interpretive signage or museum. When we tried to follow the road using ghe park Service signs neading to a columbus landing center, we fnd a locked fence and behind ita dilapidated old concrete block house and no access, and almost got stuck in the mud from a broken sewage pipe. the old sugar refinery was abandoned and falling down. The Cruzan Rum distillery makes no atempt to hide the yeast sludge they pour directly into the ocean, increasing eutrophication. When we tried to go snorkeling in one place, Fredidrickstead, where we heard the was a little residual living coral reef and few fish, we got there and me t a couple who had just returned form swimming and fond that their rental car had been broeken into and all of their belongings, wallets, eye glasses etc, had been stolen. We left before we became victims. Christenstead looks like a crime waiting to happen - dark and dingy - so we did not bother to spend much time there. Overall , we recommend you find another island that has not become a poster child for over exploitation and has not learned the word, "sustainable." they have killed the goose that laid the golden egg and turned this paradise into a cesspool.
comfortable convienent and full service beautiful lacation
Good: I really enjoyed the cabana and the privacy. The rooms are fine; no luxury but I knew that. Loved having a kitchen and a porch to relax on. Staff was very nice. Very quiet place and I often had the beach to myself or just a couple of others. Bad: lots of stuff needs repair. None of the fountains or hot tubs were functioning and obviously hadn't been for a while. There are no shops or eating places anywhere nearby except the one fairly expensive restaurant. They neglect to say that the shuttle to town costs $24 round trip which makes a trip to the grocery store pretty expensive. It is remote, so that can be a plus or a minus depending on what you are looking for.
The resort was a little run down but it was still nice. The grounds were beautiful and the beach was nice. The restaurant on site was delicious and restaurant staff was wonderful. The resort was secluded which we loved. We had a rental car but they have paid services that will pick you up and take you into town, grocery shopping and on tours. The house cleaning at the resort was HORRIBLE. There were 4 of us to a room and they forgot to clean my room the first night (excuse was we had a lot of new arrivals and I had to clean those rooms first). The following days they came in made the bed and that was it. Every day I had to go down to the front desk to request bath towels because they either did not replace towels or only left enough for two people. Not once did they clean the bathroom, leave additional soap. Other than house cleaning service, my stay was wonderful. The staff at the front desk was very helpful and apologetic for the poor housekeeping.
Having been to Sy. Croix many times, we returned after eight years to find the island little changed. Everything was so green and lush, it was a pleasure, once, again, to tour the island to our favorite places. The grounds at Chenay were in great condition and the accomodations were very nice. The staff, Anna and Sharon, in particular were very friendly and helpful. The restaurant and pool had been renovated and decorated nicely. Overall, we had a great experience. Jand R 57
The price was reasonable, but there is no way of getting out of the resort if you are the explorative kind like me. The promised coupons for dining, etc. were received after two days of my arrival. At that time, I already spent money on rental, and gifts. Thus, those coupons were not used at all. The food scarce is poor, and besides you are going to plan any activities, otherwise, it was not worth a six nights vacation. I got tired of the scenary and everything on that island on the third day. And my legs, feet were biten by gnats on the last day of my vacation, and the overall experience was a D.
We loved the cottage concept for more privacy. The staff was very accomodating and moved us from a unit with an empty pond in front to a view of the bay. The restaurant was the best and was used by many locals. The units were in dire need of maintenance and TLC. The pool was unusable except for the first day. The pumps didn't work and the pool guy didn't have a chance in keeping it clean. The windows in our unit were jalousy type and could not be fully closed, so the air conditioning worked overtime to keep it cool.. The shrubs were overgrown and when clipped were left to blow in the wind. The cats were OK except at dinner when they were a definite nuisance. All in all, they were trying to please, but the facility was not up to par.
