Good resort for the value

This resort is a family resort. It is currently undergoing a rehab due to new ownership which hopefully will change many of the less desirable features of this review. The hotel lobby, rooms, bars and gift shop are in great need of an update. They currently have a worn and well used appearance. However, even though they are dated, the staff is friendly, customer service oriented, and everything from the facilities to the grounds are kept clean and spotless. Check in was a breeze and the front desk staff was efficient and very helpful but they immediately pass you off to a sales pitch promising you discounts on excursions, vouchers for other vacations, breakfast, and other goodies for attending a morning meeting at one of their other "newer" hotels. Took about 30 minutes to go through the sales pitch before you can get away to settle in your room. These sales pitches are just not who we are and if you enjoy hearing and seeing what they have to offer then they are great but I wish they would let you know up front what this is all about instead of making it seem as if it is part of their check in process for the hotel The rooms are small and again the décor is dated and well worn but the housekeeping staff is fantastic. Kudos to the ladies who service building 51 during the week of 6/30/2016. Thanks for all the nice little extras you provided from making sure the mini bar was stocked with the items we used daily (often extra of the items we used without having to ask for them.), the cute towel displays and keeping our rooms spotless every day. Housekeeping staff deserves a very nice tip- they work for it. The mini fridge keeps drinks cool at best and does not work very well and the top floor rooms with the traditional grass roofs are much hotter than the lower floor rooms. So crank the a/c down and hope for a slightly cool room. You will have to search out electrical outlets in the room as there are only three - the TV and coffee maker are plugged into one, the alarm clock is plugged into one and there is one provided at the vanity area. I am hoping the rehab does update rooms as they are in much need of it but if you are like us we spend very little time in the room while on vacation, these rooms were clean and serviceable while we stayed and worked well for us. Just do not expect 5 star amenities here. The pool with the swim up bar was under rehab during our stay so while we were able to utilize this pool the bar area for the pool was closed. This also relocated the fine dinning Mexican restaurant up into the main dining hall at the front of the property. The pools close nightly at 10 pm which we found a little inconvenient and wished they would consider keeping them open a bit latter. Both pools are keep very clean and are serviced daily as well as have plenty of lounge chairs and towel bar conveniently located right next to them. The daily buffet was plentiful and provided a great variety of food for each meal service. We never found that making reservations for the Mexican or Italian restaurants was necessary as there was always something delicious provided a the daily buffet. The wait staff is very friendly and makes sure that customer service is a priority for each dinner. The one and only negative to say is that at each meal service it is like dinning in a sauna. The dinning hall is extremely hot and you find yourself hurrying through each meal to get out of the oppressive heat in this room. The nightly entertainment was good. The first night was Latin dance night and everyone participated in dancing to the exceptional music that was provided. Because there was so much participation it was a blast. We were given a schedule of the nightly entertainment to be provided at check in and while it was not adhered to, the staff did an exceptional job with the nightly entertainment. However, for the most part the provided entertainment was "dance shows" and left very little room for guest participation. They were nice to watch but left us desiring a little more night life than just watching a dance show each night. Again, this was a personal preference and I must say the dancers are exceptional and are very entertaining. The excursions in the area are plentiful and very fun. There is lots, lots, lots to do. Snorkeling on the reef was amazing and the staff for this excursions deserves a special shout out. They are 100% invested in providing you a day of fun on the reef and the full day excursion provides you with a traditional lunch which was some of the best food we had during the entire visit. Snorkeling on the reef is a must do! Snorkleing with the turtles - left a little to be desired but the saving grace and what makes it worth the trip is the second half of the excursion is snorkeling in an underground cenote. Nora the tour guide was very knowledgeable about the area and history and took extra time to give details and share her knowledge. Kudos to Nora. Xplor is a great tour and provides you with zip lines, cenote swims, buggy rides ect. I will warn you this is a theme park. We were expecting more than the theme park experience. Not disappointed in the overall experience as it was fun just wasn't expecting it to be so theme park.... There is so much to do and booking your excursions right from the hotel lobby is a breeze. Be prepared to have fun where ever you go but be prepared to be active. Over all while this is not a 5 star resort and there were things that were a little less desireable than we would have liked this resort is a win if you are looking for a good clean family resort to have a blast in. I am in hopes that finishing the rehab at this site will elevate the appearance of the facilities because the service here is top notch! Hope this review helps you have a wonderful time on your vacation

Fantastic stay

My family stayed 7 night and enjoyed this resort very much. Even though it is now a luxury resort, it was amazing. The service was outstanding, everyone was super nice and friendly. The buffet has 7 days menu, so it does change and has a variety of choices. The Mexican and Italian restaurant were also excellent. The room could use some update, however it was not a big deal. My family likes that is was not overly crowed, there were always beach chaisr and not much lining up for anything. The pools were clean, walking distance to 5th avenue and a little shopping plaza 2 minutes away. There is not much entertainment in this resort, but my family really did not care for that. The service, beach and pool were very pleasing.

Cheap Caribbean screwed up my reservations at the resort upon arrival, had to wait almost 4 hours to get into my room. I will not book with Cheap Caribbean again... One of the rooms was recently updated and the other was not (ac wouldnt work, ceiling fan not working, small bathroom and so on). Food was not bad but the staff isnt over joyed to help you out.. The only staff that would help you out was the ones trying to sell you a timeshare, they were TOO much... Once the place is done with the updates I might consider going back, loved how the rooms were set up... Beach was great...

Good first time in Mexico

This was our first time in Mexico. We used CheapCaribbean to schedule round trips from the airport and our company was Amstar who were fantastic. The hotel and workers were nice. Our room definitely could use some updating, and it was pretty small. However, it worked perfectly fine for us. The drinks could've been better, but the food was actually good. At night they have some entertainment which was fun and you can meet some people there. You get what you pay for and there are no complaints from us.

Pictures do no justice.

Everything was amazing. Especially the staff. Everyone treated you like royalty. Resort was so beautiful ! It's located in a little private gated community with mansions and other resorts. But the beach is right in front of the pool. I'm going back very soon!

Okay cheap getaway

Overall I enjoyed my trip, beach was beautiful, food was good and we met a pretty cool server by the name David he was very nice and helpful. Only thing I would like if they played top 40 music and offered a better night life. The rooms are really small but we didn't spend much time in them. Everyone is really nice.. my only main complaint was the people selling the timeshares... they were OVERLY AGGRESSIVE.. I'm in sales and I can't imagine myself hassling people after they said NO 20 times.

Good for the money

For the price we paid it was acceptable. Overall the resort was average with a few negatives. Let's start with the water. If you love a beautiful beach, you will love this one. The beach was absolutely amazing and they kept the area very clean. There were always plenty of chairs and the the resort had plenty to offer for beach fun. If you are a pool goer you will not be impressed. The area around the pools were fine but the pools themselves were a little dirty. The food was average for a resort this size. The buffet offered a different region of the world every night with a few staples so it was nice not having to eat the same thing all week. We didn't make it to the Italian restaurant but the Mexican was delicious and definitely the highlight as far as food goes. The pizza and burger bar were just ok, nothing to brag about. The beer selection was not good, they only offered Corona in the all inclusive package and I'm just not a fan, but if you are you will be good to go. The entertainment team was very good and interactive. They always had something going on, from bingo to a beer drinking contest. Now the rooms...they definitely left something to be desired. The bed was awful, it felt like we were sleeping on a box spring. I'm still not sure it wasn't. The roof is a thatch roof and it seems they do not help with noise. We had horrible neighbors that woke up very early every morning and did not care how loud they were talking. And because of the lack of insulation we could hear every word of their conversation like they were in the room with us. Maybe if they would not have been as loud it would have made a difference.

wont' be back

this is our 2nd time, was hoping for improvements. Sadly, this resort is declining in nearly every area. ROOM: no working AC,, reported to front desk, nothing was ever done. room smelled like cat urine, had to throw away my carryon when I got home because it smelled so bad. POOL: could not swim the first 2 days, the pool was filthy, looked like vomit floating on the top at one corner. BEACH: perfect!!!!! super clean and clear water, soft sand FOOD: choices are limited but what we ate was very good, excellent wait staff, especially HUMBERTO at breakfast,, he is awesome! chefs are wonderful with special requests DRiNKS: good drinks, bartenders are very nice GROUNDS: gorgeous and well maintained FRONT DESK STAFF: unfriendly all in all, the negatives outway positives. we will not be returning.

Not horrible but...

... Very aggressive excursion sales people drove us nuts. ... Construction to the resort (which we found about after booking) took the swim up bar out of commission, and meant there was hammering and construction dirt at the pools .... Thatched roofs of top floor rooms aren't insulated for sound at all and it sounds like people in neighboring rooms are right beside you. ... I would call this place kid-tolerant, not kid-friendly. If you are hoping for a place that really caters to kids, with activities for them, look elsewhere. Pluses: comfy beds, lots of fresh veggies and fruits, heavenly beach with plenty of shaded seating.

Do not stay here. This hotel is horrible. I have been in Cancun and Playa del Carmen plenty of times but nothing like this. Ac does not work at all. Food was below average. Service was really bad. I paid for a junior suit and they never gave it to me because there were not rooms available. Rooms are dirty.
